Protect Your Grandfathered-In Pricing

I called AT&T to go over my bill. During the call I was convinced to change my land line telephone service to AT&T Universal, despite some reservations which I expressed to the telephone agent. The reason to make the change was to save money on the monthly bill. She ordered the AT&T Universal and set me up for installation on April 21.

Within a couple of days I realized that I did not want to switch. On Friday, April 8, I called AT&T to cancel the order. I was then told that my land line pricing was going up because my old pricing was no longer available as I was grandfathered in. I explained to the agent that I had never started the new AT&T Universal service so how could my old pricing have disappeared? I was never told that my decision to switch was irrevokable or involved any risk if I changed my mind.

The worst part is that from the moment I placed the order, my phone pricing went up without any notice whatsoever.in between the time I placed the order and the time the AT&T Universal was installed, I was paying a higher phone bill while I waited without anyone having had an obligation to inform me.

I spoke with a supervisor who said nothing could be done. I could not have the "old" pricing back as it does not exist any more. He gave me a $10 discount on my internet instead but I was still paying more. After he tried to calm me down with the new internet pricing, I was smart enough to ask if that price was permanent. Of course, it is only temporary but he did not volunteer that information.

This whole thing was a shake down. I was unknowingly "giving away" my "grandfathered-in" pricing without ever having completed any changes and completely without notice or warning. This is dead wrong and feels like shady business practices, at best.
