Why should I have to pay for something that I don't want

I opened an account with this company in 2007. I then went back and added another item. The item I bought was not the item they explained to me. I then went back to return the item, and they would not take it. I was told that I had to bring it back within 30 days after purchase. I have tried to return this item on numerous occassions and was told that I would have to return everything on the account before they would take the item that I don't want back. Why should I have to be forced to pay for something that I cannot operate and that I don't want. Is there a law aganist this. Please help.
