Best Buy Repackaging Returns and Selling as New

Electronics and household app.

I went into our local Best Buy yesterday to buy a replacement power supply for my computer. I picked out an Antec Earthwatts 500 watt ATX 12V v. 2.2. When I got home to install it, inside the box was a completely different power supply - a Rhino. There was also no protective packaging inside the box or an instruction sheet. I immediately went back to the store to exchange it for the correct model.

Upon returning to the store, the return associate said they could not accept it as it was not the model listed on the box. I said, "That is why I am retuning it." he said there was nothing he could do. He called the "line manager" over. The line manager said that he could not accept it as it was not the same model listed. He said I would have to call corporate.

I requested he call corporate and he said I could do it myself, so I did within the store. The corporate consumer relations said they would not accept it as there was no way for them to tell when the item was replaced and said it was up to the manufacturer of the product to replace it with the correct product.

I then called the manufacturer and they said that Rhino is not one of our product lines/models and it is up to the retailer to rectify. I immediately called consumer relations back and received the same information.

So basically, someone bought and then returned their old power supply. Best Buy accepted it, repackaged it, and sold it as new and is unwilling to accept responsibility for their actions. Upon review, Best Buy has been successfully sued in various states, including Ohio, for this same pratice.

I went to Circuit City immediately afterwards and purchased the correct power supply.
