Idle surge during stops

I took my car describing the symptoms but instead of performing the diagnostics, they recommended me to try first their $100 dollar gas treatment displayed in their counter.
I did my research regarding my issue and found out that my PCV valve elbow is cracked. I grabbed one at the parts store for less than $8 and it solved the problem.
If I heeded on their first option, I wonder what might have cost me on their next recommendation.
