Incompetent diagnosing and repair of a Maytag dryer nearly caused a house fire. Ripoff

A-1 Repairs advertises repairing all major home appliances including refrigerators, freezers, ice makers, dishwashers, ovens, ranges, disposals, washers, dryers, heat and air conditioning.

My Maytag dryer was approximately 8 years old. On Sunday, July 8, my wife noted that although the dryer was running, the clothes were not being dried. My wife and I assumed that the dryers heating element might have to be replaced. On Monday, July 9, she called A-1 Repairs to arrange for servicing, and an A-1 Repairs technician came to our house later that day. The A-1 Repairs technician took the Maytag dryer apart; he told my wife that there was nothing wrong with the Maytag dryer and that, instead, there was something wrong with the electricity coming into the house to the dryer. The technician put the dryer back together, including some electrical components of the dryer.

Fortunately I was home from work the next day, Monday, July 10. Although the dryer was not running, around 2:00 P.M.in the afternoon I heard some loud popping sounds. I investigated and heard some more loud popping sounds, and saw large flashes of light and smoke coming from behind the dryer.

At the breaker box in the house, I shut off the electricity in the entire house, and then called the Fire Company. The lead fireman who responded to my call showed me that the plaster board behind the dryer had been singed, and that a short within the electrical components of the dryer had caused some arcing and had actually put a large hole through an electrical plate at the rear of the dryer.

The dryer was ruined.in addition to the probable heating element issue which I had before calling A-1 Repairs, I now had a more serious problem. My wife and I replaced the dryer with a new one. Prior to having the new dryer installed, we had our homes electrical system checked by a licensed electrician. He informed us that the electricity coming into the house was fine, and that there was nothing wrong within the house itself. The problem we had was caused by a short within the dryer, which we feel was caused by the A-1 Repairs technician as he took apart, misdiagnosed, and then put back together the dryer.

Had I not been home the day after the A-1 Repairs service call, my wifes and my home could very likely have burned down. This occurred not only because of the repair servicemans incompetence, but also because the management and ownership of A-1 Repairs sent that technician to my home.
