Lied about available rebates

I bought a refrigerator from Sears. When I was looking at the different options I found a nice one for about $850. The salesman informed me that there was a slightly bigger one for $1000, but there was a $100 rebate from the state of California for its energy compliance certification. I took that refrigerator, and sent in the paperwork for the rebate. After waiting about 10 weeks without a response, I called the city office number that was listed with the rebate. The person there found my info, read me my refrigerators model number, and informed me that there was no way it was every going to be covered as one of the available refrigerators. She even mailed me a list of the refrigerators that were covered, and there was nothing like the model I got listed on there.

When I called Sears to complain about losing out on getting the $100 refund I was informed: 1. They won't take the refrigerator back because it has been used for months (I can understand this, and did not even ask for them to take it back), and 2. Rebates are never guaranteed, and they are not responsible to give me any kind of store credit, refund, or anything. Even if the salesperson "made a mistake, and gave me bad information, [they] hold no responsibility because this is in response to a rebate, which [they] never guarantee".

Well thank you very much Sears! I am not going back for anything other than exchanging Craftsman tools. You should too. They have to exchange them no matter what, so if you always want nice clean screwdrivers, hammers, and other hand tools, get the brand that they exchange for new until the end of time without a receipt.
