I was a SKEPTIC! I am a professional IT consultant supporting small businesses. We install and support VoIP (Voice over IP) phone systems and networks that allow our customers to work wherever and whenever they want.
When my sister told me she cancelled her Qwest phone service and got a Magic Jack, I laughed!
When she talked our mom into doing the same I was a little irritated.
I was a little skeptical that a $20/yr device could provide adequate call quality vs my mom's $45/month Qwest.
However... I helped her install it and have to admit, the process was simple and quick, and we were able to easily port her long-standing phone number to Magic Jack, so she didn't have to get used to a new phone number after 40-yrs!
So far, so good. I'd given her a three-handset Panasonic 5.8Ghz phone system, and it works perfectly with Magic Jack.
She can make or receive calls on her PC or any of three handsets. The base station is plugged into the Magic Jack, and just works.
I'm not necessarily dumping my VoIP (3CX, Windows 2008 Server, Lync, etc) for Magic Jack, but for many people looking to save moeny and maintain adequate phone capability, this thing is pretty cool.
So far, at least!
After reading many negative reviews, I thought it was worth adding a positive review.in my professional life, a negative experience is much more likely to make an impact and be shared with others.
One caveat - although my sister loves hers and recommended to our mom, she was amazed at how quickly and easily I set it up. She claimed it took her several days tech support to get all squared away. I don't know if that was due to Magic Jack, or my sister's lack of detail orientation, computer savvy, etc.
All I can say is that my first experience was excellent!
