Defective Soles?

I purchased a set of 10M Clarks footwear in March 09. The bottoms on both sneakers are suffering from an extended break perpendicular towards the period of the boot underneath the ball of the base.

I called Clarks plus they are delivering me a totally free alternative set. Ideally they keep going longer than 12 months.
