Sold car of unsatisfactory quality

My daughter bought a VW Lupo from Amanda Car Sales recently and unfortunately the car had a fault and I wasn't able to change gear after driving home on the motorway. It became apparent the fault was pre existing as I contacted the previous keeper but I was unable to get the Trader to resolve the matter despite involving Trading Standards and even offering to take a 200 loss on my part to return it.
This company offer a good range of economical, low insurance reasonably priced cars, the lady I dealt with was friendly and I would describe the buying experience as enjoyable. I honestly believe this company were not aware this fault would show up, but unfortunately, the burden of responsibility for existing defects lies soley with the Trader not the buyer.
In the meantime the car resides in my garage and my daughter has bought another car.
