Toyota Of El Cajon
Deceptive sales tactics. How can a used truck be more than a new truck?!

Cars & Transport

This happened in 2005. I went to Toyota of El Cajon just to look at getting a new truck. I had a sales Representative approach me and ask how can I help you? Asked him if they had any Tacoma X-Runners in stock. He said yes and took me over to the used car lot. I saw a very pretty 2004 speedway blue x-runner with 9,000 miles on it. I have been eyeing one of these for a while now since the new body style came out in 2004. Test drove it, and fell in love. Asked the price and he said $27,000. I said too much but he said come in and we will run the numbers.

So we went back and forth with the numbers for probably about 3-4 hours just because they came back with a rediculous amount the first time of like 750 a month!!! Kept saying no cant afford it but they kept on saying ok let me go check. So after this they finally came back with a resonable amount for me. During this whole process I was wondering how much a new x-runner cost's and they kept saying oh probably about the same amount after the fee's. So I took their word for it and bought the truck.

That same night I decided to do a little research about the price I got and it turned out that a new toyota tacoma x-runner at the time was $24,000. Needless to say I was a little pissed about this, especially since they told me the price would be the same or even more expensive!

I came back the next day to talk to the sales manager I dealt with. He kept telling me oh we got you an awesome deal and this truck is one of a kind, and dont you like it? I asked how can a new truck be cheaper than a used truck? He said the reason was because it was "certified" and the warranty extends to 100,000 miles. To do this on a new car would cost you $3,000 extra on top of the price. He even showed me print out of price quotes for used x-runners about the same price of what I paid.

It just doesnt seem right that a company can charge more for a used vehicle than a new one?!?! Dont vehicle values drop once you drive off the lot? Not increase? And even if you can get away with charging more doesnt it just seem not ethically correct? Toyota of El Cajon just doesnt get it and I tried re-financing my truck with them but they wouldnt have it. So I just got what I could from them. A set of new floor mats and a spare key.

Suffice it to say my business went elsewhere after this experience.
