Uninvited Phone Marketing Employing Misleading Statements About Prior Business with Me

Cars & Transport

This morning I received a phone call from a number which was Caller ID blocked.

I answered the call. Then I was routed to a recording which stated that my automobile warranty was about to expire. The recording indicated that if I wanted to extend this warranty: I should hold on for the next available representative.

When I got a person, the first thing I did was attempt to get a name of this company. He said the company was Warranty Services. I was able to get the name of the representative and the address of the company, also. The representative said he did not have access to any phone number for the company.

He wanted to know the make and model of my vehicle. I asked him why he needed this information if he already knew my phone number and that my current warranty was about to expire. He said he needed this info in order to look up my account.

I explained to the sales representative that I felt that the recording that kept me holding for him was misleading - that I expected that his company should already have this information on me.

He tried once more, asking me for the make and model of my vehicle. I refused and said I didn't trust his company because their marketing tactics seemed dishonest.

So we both politely ended the call.

My big question is how they got my number. My worst fear is that this company is bogus and attempting to gather personal and identifying information of random victims using the phone system. A lesser worry is that they would sell some extended warranty and simply not be there to satisfy any claims.

Finally, please know that the last vehicle warranty I had was in the 1980s. I am sure it was "about to expire" long ago! I've bought only used vehicles and without warranties ever since.
