Buyer Beware, Read the fine print

Cars & Transport

I had a transmission failure on my 1999 Volvo S70. I was able to get the car home, so I waited for the Eagle Warranty Company office to be open before I did anything. I called and told them the situation and asked them where they wanted me to bring the car. I was told that I could bring it anywhere I wanted. I repeated that it was a transmission and again was told to bring it where ever I wanted. I told them the nearest place for me to go was a Volvo dealer and again I was told that was fine.

I called the dealer and had the car towed to their shop. I gave the service advisor the warranty info and told her she had to open the claim before they did anything. I was called later that day to be informed that the car did in fact need a transmission and the warranty company wanted them to tear down the trans before they would consider any claim. Volvo dealers (and most other dealers) will not tear down transmissions so my only choice was to have the car towed to another shop. When I called to inquire as to why I was told it was ok to Volvo if they knew they (Eagle) would want the transmission torn down, a very arrogant person going by the name of Joe said he didn't tell me to take it to a dealer and it needed to go to a transmission repair shop. Rather than continue with this pointless arguement, I had the car towed to an Aamco in the area.

I gave the customer service rep at Aamco the warranty information and within an hour of the car getting to his shop, he called to ask me for authorization to tear down the trans, as this is what "Joe" requested he do, as they (Eagle) did not pay for diagnostics. I gave Aamco the ok to tear it down, and the next day he called to let me know there was a mechanical breakdown that was not uncommon in this make and model trans. Because of the attitude he detected from Joe at Eagle, he went ahead and priced all used and remanufactured parts for the repair, rather than look at anything new. The repair was fairly expensive, and I expected there to be some argument with Eagle.

When he called Joe at Eagle, and told him the cost, Joe, without missing a beat told him they would give me $1,100 to repair the trans, far less than what the repair estimate was. I immediatly called Joe to ask how he got at that number, and he told me $600 for a used trans and $500 to install it. I asked him what about the 3/4 of a day they had in tearing the old trans down, and he smuggly said he didn't authorize that, I did. He even gave me the time and date that I did. He also told me that he wasn't going to pay what Aamco said it would cost as that was more than what he felt it should be and inferred that is almost what I paid for the car, which it wasn't.in the end, it is going to cost me $1,500 to have a used transmission installed in my car, not to mention the week that has already transpired not getting my car fixed.

To summarize, you need to read everything on the contract. If you read the top and middle part of the form (I have the Liberty), it looks like everything is covered. It's when you get to the bottom, that's where it all comes apart. They can give you used parts, tell you to take it somewhere else on your dime, and to add insult to injury, they only honor up to $50 an hour shop time. It's been 15 years since any shop with any integrity has had a $50 an hour shop rate in this area.
