Cars & Transport

About a year ago I brought my 1992 Chevy Cavalier in to the Pepboys in Grand Rapids, MI to have new struts and shocks put on. I keep my car in excellent condition as it is my soul method of transportation so I knew that the only thing that it needed fixed was the struts and shocks. I have worked on cars since I was 12 years old and very seldom let anyone else work on my car. This time however the job was rather involved and I didn't want to mess with it.

So I dropped it off in the morning before they opened as I was instructed the day before. They never even got to it that day and said that if I picked it up that night it would be taken off the work list, so I was forced to leave it over night and find other transportation.

The following day I called them about noon to check on my car and they informed me that they had caused a little accident on my car. The mechanic working on my front struts had set one of my drive axles on fire with a torch he was using to loosen some frozen bolts. The replacement axle was a special and they would not get it till the following day. So again I had to find other transportation for the evening and next day.

I recieved a call the next day just before noon telling me my car was ready for pickup. I arrived a little after 12:30pm, paid the bill, and left the store. I got in my car and started off back to work. Just as I got out of their drive my anti-lock brake flashed on and stayed on. I tested the anti-lock feature and found that it was no longer working. I went back that evening and complained to the service department about the problem and they told me that it didn't work when they got it in to there shop. I argued that it was working fine before they worked on it and they refered me to the manager. He agreed to look at it the next day to see what was wrong only.

Again I dropped it off to them the next day and went to work. The service department called me after noon that day and said my car was ready for pick up again. When I got there my car was not fixed. I talked to the manager and he said that they found no damage and that they were not responsible for the problem. When I pushed the issue with him he said that it had to be broken before they got it and they don't fix antilock brake systems.

So in the end I ended up with new shocks and struts and a nonfunctional antilock brake system which will cost me 5 or 6 times the cost of the struts to get repaired. I cannot afford to make this kind of repair as I don't make alot of money.
