Nearly 9,000 Car Owners Will Get a Refund
If you've done business with Bill Heard Chevrolet you may have some money coming to you. The state says nearly 9,000 Tennesseans are due a refund.
It's part of a settlement between the car dealer and the attorney general's office. Bill Heard of Nashville and Airport Chevrolet of Memphis are accused of charging customers for the dealer's business tax... Illegally.
Letters will go out in February to customers who have been effected. State law does permit the business to pass it's tax along to you, but, it must be listed separately. It can't be lumped in with sales, state or local taxes.
It is also reported that car buyers have had their vehicles reposessed by Bill Heard Chevrolet before they make the first payment. Bill Heard sales employees are mis-leading buyers that their loan has been approved and allow the buyer to take their car purchase home, when in fact the buyer is tricked into signing a release that their loan is pending (which is in small print and not pointed out to the consumer). The dealer takes the buyers trade-in, and allows the buyer to drive the new vehicle home. Some incidents have been reported, that buyers have had their new vehicle repossesed by Bill Heard before the first payment is made in the middle of the night and the buyer discovering their new vehicle is missing the next morning. One buyer lost his job because his new car was repossesed and had no way to get to work. Law requires that the vehicle owner is to be notified that the vehicle is going to be repossesed and several buyers claim they had no such notice from Bill Heard Chevrolet.
