Japanese Auto Repair & Import Engine Sales
Failed 20r engine rebuild from

Cars & Transport

Tuesday, September 19

I want my friends to be refunded the money they were charged on their credit card, believing that Japanese Auto Service & Import Engine Sales was a reputable company to deal with.

It is as simple as that. Why would you think I am going to trust you to fix up the hack job you did on rebuilding my truck engine? Why?

Please understand that all I am asking for here is for you to realize that you did not get this engine rebuild done correctly. You willfully mis-adjusted internal engine parts to make up for faulty parts. You denied any problem exists. You do shoddy work. And you change your story each time you respond to me.

At no time have you simply admitted failure and offered to refund my friends money.

This is what we want. This is what we should receive for your failure to provide services as charged, for your failure to acknowledge there were problems, for your failure to follow up with good customer service, for your failure to follow up in a timely manner.

Sincerely,

Doyle B Thibert

Re: Case # *

Dear Doyle Thibert

I received your complaint but what I do not understand why you did not bring the car in for us to check it out. You have 30 days labor warranty I do not believe the engine has that many problems that you mentioned if that is the case why do I have so many satisfied customer about our rebuilt engines especially 22R/20R we can rebuild them while our eyes are closed. Then it should not have taken 5 weeks for you to complete this engine rebuild, right? We treat every customer the same no matter what kind of vehicle they have, we have an agreement in writing and you sign it before we touched your car. The agreement mentioned that when you pick up your truck after the job is done you need to watch the vehicle for the first 30 days in case some seals do not get sealed because they are new or valves need to be adjusted. Also you were told verbally and in writing that after you drive the truck for 5 days or 200 miles you need to bring it in to us so that we can check it and do an oil flush.instead you did not even call us to tell us to tell us you have problem nor you came back for the oil change you just want money back. This is incorrect information! I called and spoke with Fada a few days after receiving my truck and asked if it would make a difference if I had approx. 280 miles on the truck when I brought it in on the following Monday, July 31st. Fada told me this would be just fine, no appointment is needed, see you on Monday. I have the receipt for payment of $25.00 to show that I came in on Monday the 31st of July to have the truck oil changed and to have the truck checked. I will also produce for the court, copies of my email from work where I had to ask to get off work early on July 31st. I can also provide for the court if needed, recordings of my conversation with Fada about bringing the truck in for this checkup and oil change. You see, I was employed in a technical support call center and all calls are recorded for legal purposes. While this oil was being changed (took about 10, maybe 15 minutes) I asked Al why the truck would be blowing blue smoke when it is accelerated and he told me this is why Japanese Auto Repair & Import Engine Sales was changing the oil. At no time during this oil change was the engine checked by your mechanics. I even asked Al again about why the valve train was knocking against the valve cover and the answer he gave did not make any sense to me. You did not even pay with your own money or credit card you brought a friend to pay for you even though we do no accept credit cards from non customers we still did not make it hard for you. I took every proof from you and your friend for the credit card payment. I requested an agreement between both of you since I found the transaction being suspicious even before you picked up the truck. Why would Japanese Auto Repair & Import Engine Sales be so suspicious of me having a friend help out in a time of need? Larry Allen and other members of his family were present during this transaction. We all live in the same house. I was not trying to deceive you in any way! I think you are a good story teller. I am only relating to the Better Business Bureau, and anyone else who may have the power to assist me, the story of what an incredible pain in the backside it has been to try getting any customer service at all from Japanese Auto Repair & Import Engine Sales. I have been in the business over 10 years I have never heard from any customer that he / she had problems as much as you stated. We understand parts could be defective or small things go wrong and that is why you have warranty for one year on the engine and 30 days on labor for you to try the vehicle and let us know how it is.

In conclusion if you just found out your truck is not worth the money you spent then it is not right for you to make us loose all the money we spent please bring the truck in for us to check the engine and if we have to we can even install another engine for you even though I do not believe that the truck has that many problems When this engine was rebuilt the camshaft was completely out of tolerance (the cam lobes had been improperly ground and this was confirmed for me by another engine rebuild shop) and Japanese Auto Repair & Import Engine Sales tried to compensate for the faulty part by willfully over adjusting the valve clearances, thus the noise and the racket, and improper valve closure and timing issues, and the blue smoke. The other engine rebuild shop properly adjusted the valves and the engine timing and Voila! No blue smoke and no clattering of the valve train against the valve cover. And after this adjustment the truck was able to pass Oregon DEQ. You can still hear suspect noise from the #4 cylinder because of the cam follower lobe be ground down too far. What this truck engine needs is another camshaft (properly ground) and properly installed and adjusted. This is not something that I could ever trust Japanese Auto Repair and Import Engine Sales to do correctly. They not only adjusted the valves incorrectly to make up for a faulty mechanical part, they denied any problems with the rebuild. The only problem you should have is your manifold and you should know about that and yes the manifold could make problems like smoking and loud noise from it I did take a 5/8diameter by 3 foot in length wooden dowel and by cupping my hand around my ear and one end of the dowel was able to place the other end onto the top of the various valve sections of the cylinder head and valve cover while the truck was running and you could definitely tell something was in bad shape on cylinder number 4 valve train because the mechanical metal-on-metal noise was extremely loud. And you know that you refused to pay for new manifold since it was around 500 dollars It is not true that only the dealer carries the exhaust manifolds for these trucks and Japanese Auto Repair and Import Engine Sales knows this. I would have asked my friends to assist me with the additional money for an exhaust manifold replacement, even at the $500 pricing, except that Japanese Auto Repair & Import Engines Sales only informed me of their inability to locate a manifold better than mine at the last minute. And only the dealer has it. BULLSHIT! On the day I picked up the truck I challenged Al with Japanese Auto Repair & Import Engine Sales on this and to humor me I guess, he called Baxter Auto Parts in Hillsboro and they priced him an exhaust manifold for $135.00. You informed us that you will take care of that we just did the engine part of it and not every thing around the engine. Our engine represents the cost of head and block only look at your agreement please.

Please feel free to call us and I will even pay for towing if you need it just for us to get an opportunity to look at the engine because rebuilt engine involves many shops like the machine shop work and the head place and the engine internal parts. So we have to find out what is the problem so we can correct our mistakes if there are any. You are expecting me to give you money for some thing we did not even check yet.

Why should I trust Japanese Auto Repair & Import Engine Sales to check their own shoddy workmanship? Would you? Would the Better Business Bureau want to have its fleet of cars and trucks maintained by a business that willfully misadjusted internal engine parts to make up for bad parts tolerances to the point of causing an engine to smoke and fail the Oregon DEQ test and to constantly clatter with a metal on - metal sound, and to constantly blow blue smoke any time you accelerate the engine? Well? Would you really trust a business like this to fix its own failures? I have plenty of customer service experience and I know when people just want to get money and I know there are a lot that want to get good relation ship with good mechanics so that they will be safe driving their vehicle and depend on us for all their safety issues and the mechanical portion of it. It is not the end of the world if it is true you have problems you have nothing to loose we will the engine at no cost to you if it is related to our labor or parts.

I am also including letter from some of our customers that are very satisfied with our work to show you that we really take care of our customers very well.

Sincerely,
The manager

Doyle
