CarFax
Ripoff Protecting the rights of the criminals

Cars & Transport

On July 2nd, I was the victim of a combination of computer crime, identity theft crime and credit card fraud crime.

The perpetrator of this crime was NOT the company CarFax, however CarFax has information (i.E., direct evidence) that is both highly relevant and material to this criminal case. They have the e-mail address that was fraudulently used by the perpetrator (who used that e-mail address, apparently his own, but with my name, full address and credit card number to order a "Vehicle History Report" for a SPECIFIC vehicle). They also have - in their files - the specific vehicle information that the perpetrator was ordering this report for. That specifically would be the vehicle's serial number, the vehicle's last known owner, the history of the vehicle's ownership, etc.

In fact, the perpetrator may have since used the CarFax report to purchase the vehicle in question and a simple search of registration records could very well lead law enforcement authorities directly to the perpetrator of these crimes (some of which are felony offenses).

CarFax has been completely uncooperative in providing ANY assistance in providing evidence in their possession that would be clearly of great help in legally addressing the criminal actions of the perpetrators who (A) stole my identity, (B) committed at least one computer crime, and (C) committed at least one fraudulent use of a credit card crime.

In fact, CarFax does not even have a listed telephone number that is of any importance in dealing with this problem. The telephone number listed on the billing statement (1-877-429-6148) is simply an electronic message that informs you to visit their web site and gives their e-mail address.

If you go to their web site (wwe. Carfax.com) it specifies that customer service problems can be dealt with ONLY via e-mail (which is a stupid policy for Consumer Rights also... Speaking of "truth in advertising", I also noted commentaries like this on their web page: "If CARFAX fails to include a DMV-reported incident (salvage, fire, flood damage, odometer problems, lemon history) in a CARFAX Report, we may buy the vehicle back for the full purchase price."...

MAY buy the vehicle back for its full purchase price?

May?

How many cars have they actually ever bought back?

See: http://www.carfax.com/about/car_history/hcabout. Cfm).

Also see: http://www.carfax.com/cfm/helpcenter_2002. Cfm "All customer service is provided via email"

And yet I couldn't readily find their e-mail address listed anywhere (I had to call back that 1-877 number to obtain it and write it down)

Using my own research skills and investigative work, I was able to locate the following company information on CarFax:

CarFax
10304 Eaton Pl. Suite 500,

Having a company policy for privacy right protection is an excellent idea... But common sense should tell you that it is for standard situations when it is for the protection of the consumer and is a policy (not a law) that can and should be waived when it is being utilized to protect the criminal perpetrator!
