Cars & Transport

I purchased a 1992 Bronco from Redcap on EBay and I was told that the vehicle "ran like a top" with "no worrisome noises or problems." The description made the truck sound like an excellent work vehicle and being that it was the color that I was looking for I decided to ignore the warning signs and take a risk on these sellers. Obviously that was a big mistake.

Let me clarify first that I had no expectations of a vehicle in great condition but the vehicle was advertised as running and driving well. Given the condition of the interior and exterior the price was about right if the motor and transmission were OK. Having been in automotive wholesale myself I assumed all of the negative feedback was due to individuals expecting to get a new car for the price of a very old one. I did not expect much but a truck with a lot of cosmetic problems that ran and drove well.

After flying to New Jersey from North Carolina to pick up the truck I was able to drive for 8.6 miles before the engine in the truck blew.in all of my years of buying and selling cars I have never experience this sort of blatant trickery. These individuals have the ability to totally divorce themselves from any decency and therefore can easily sell you a lemon without remorse.

According to my mechanic the motor was in poor condition and this was obvious to anyone with any real experience with motors. I repeatedly asked these individuals about this motor before during and after the sale before I left the lot as I myself have very little experience with this type of car. After the motor blew the individuals at Redcap made absolutely no effort to remedy the problem.

I ended up spending 8 hours in a hot Bronco during which the owners of the lot walked by twice without a word and then a 16 hour tow truck ride home. Obviously you can imagine that I ended up spending much more getting the vehicle home than I had originally intended on spending on the entire vehicle purchase.

Overall this was a dismal experience. I have purchased over 10 cars on EBay from a $900 pair of 81 300Ds to $36,000 for a 1971 280SL and I have never had a moment's trouble with any of them. Most of the sellers on EBay are honest and will describe the automobile effectively and they will also try to help you if a problem arises. With redcap you might get lucky but there's a good chance you're definitely going to get the short end of the stick.

My advice to anyone considering purchasing a car from these individuals is to be very careful and your best bet is to simply stay away. I am not alone in this sentiment. There is an entire website dedicated to these thieves and this site can be found at: (link deleted - see below)

After reviewing this site and their EBay feedback I think that you will agree that at the very least you should be very, very careful. Thanks for taking the time to read my report and feel free to email me at any time and I will provide you with written proof of every thing that I have said. Good Luck!!
