Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Created an account w/out permission from CitiBank acquisition - account on Credit Bureau report Edmonton

Business & Finance

When applying for an alternate credit card today (left MC at gas station - 2 weeks to get a new one from credit union) the application process showed who I had credit cards with. CIBC showed up. I was totally unaware that I had a CIBC credit card. I do because they bought out Citibank and I did have a CitiBank PetroCanada card that was inactive and cancelled, but my records transferred to CIBC in the acquisition complete with SIN, security questions, etc.

To complete the TD credit card application, I had to go to CIBC to request a letter that proved that I had no liabilities with CIBC. That would take 2 days. TD would not take verbal confirmation that I had no outstanding credit with CIBC, so that process will delay the TD Visa application.

My point: How did CIBC have the authority to issue a credit card that would show up on my credit bureau record when I didn't request or activate the credit card. The CIBC rep said it would take years to become inactive and cancelled. The card became active with the transfer of my personal information with the takeover of CitiBank's info in 2011.

Isn't that just wrong?
