Offered 30 day free credit check trial and then after only 2 days charged credit card $8.95 without my knowledge or permission. California Internet

Business & Finance

On April 26 I responded to an ad for a 30 day free credit check trial offer. The ad stated that this offer was free and that the only reason they needed my credit card number was so they could charge should I decide to continue after the 30 day free trial period. Two days later consumerinfo.com charged my debit card $8.95 without my permission or knowledge.

When I called the "800" number that appeared on my bank statement, to get a refund, they refused saying that the free offer was only for first time users. They stated that I had received a free credit check three years ago so they charged me for one months service. They also said that I should have known that they were going to charge me when the email they sent opened with "Welcome back Clifford".

Nowhere in the ad, the "Terms and Conditions" statement or in the disclosures statement did they say that this free offer was limited to first time users or that any charges would apply before the end of the free 30 day period. They stated in the ad that this was a free offer with no catches and that no charges would be made unless you failed to cancel before the end of the 30 day free trial period. This is deceitful advertising and it's fraud.
