Macy's Card Scam

After gather some items from the store I proceeded to the checkout and was asked if I'd be interested in saving a certain amount. I answered yes and was then told I had to apply for a Macy's card. I decided to get one intended never to use it. After I filled out some paperwork; I was told I was approved then asked for my debit card for "payment" on the items I had purchased. I gave my card to the cashier who then proceeded to ring me up. The register produced a receipt only after I signed the electronic keypad allowing the amount to be debited from my checking account.

A few months later I opened a statement from Macy expecting a zero balance but instead learned that I owed $115.56. I had originally thought the balance was a mistake but unbeknownst me the original and only purchased I made was placed on this card. The statement also included several fee charges. I believe the cashier at Macy intentional misled me into believing that the amount was taken out of my checking account. Had I know the amount was charge to the Macy's card I would have expected a statement and made the payment to avoid the fee. I called customer service and was offered a removal of the fee but rejected and instead insisted my Macy's account be canceled. This seems to be a common practice of Macy as evidence by other similar stories I've seen online.
