SOLD Stock without consent because balance went under $5000 New York

Without any notice they chose to sell off our investment in stocks (3000 shares not worth much but originally purchase for $14,000). They said their fine print allows them to do this without any notification if our balance with them is less than $5,000. I was outraged. I thought of the relationship this way: we owned the stock and their job was to get a little commission here and there. They could have notified us about what we needed to do or close out our account but I never dreamed they could sell our stocks without our knowledge. Stay away from Etrade, tell all of your friends about how we got screwed.
