Money - overdraft fees

Overdraft fees were imposed 4 times in one day for debits all under $8. The fees totaled $140, and the branch manager would not reverse one of them. The debits hit the account while the bank was reserving money from our account to cover a check card request for our daughter's college rent. The money was not taken out of account, and still hasn't been, but the overdraft charges remain. The date of the reserved amount was for 1-15-10, while the 4 debits hit the bank on 1-14-10, and at that time the account had sufficient amount to cover the debits. We deposited enough money to cover the reserved amount on 1-15-10, and the reserved amount has not been deducted yet, but the fees were still imposed and stand. How can they we get charged these excessive fees when the bank has not even deducted the reserved amount yet?
