Fifth Third Bank
Charged a rediculous amount in overdraft fees after stopping payment of telephone transaction

Business & Finance

At the end of May I went into Fifth Third Bank to stop payment on a telephone initiated payment that I had previously set up. I told my bank the exact date and amount of the payment that would be coming in.

The very next day, I checked my online statement to find out that not only had they paid the telephone inititated payment of $535.38, but I had $231.00 in overdraft fees posted to my account on June 2nd.

On June 4th there were $32.00 in overdraft fees posted to my account and on June 8th and 15th there were $24.00 in overdraft fees posted to my account. Between all of these dates, I had $8.00 each day in overdraft fees posted to my account as well, totaling $80.00.

So for over the course of a month, I had $391.00 in overdraft fees posted to my account. After complaining to my bank, they reversed only $150.00 in fees. For an entire month, Fifth Third Bank took my entire paycheck, which was direct deposit, until all of these fees were paid.

On July 7th, another $33.00 in overdraft fees and on July 9th another $32.00 in overdraft fees were posted to my account. My account is now cleared after taking two and a half paychecks. My banking is done at Fifth Third.

I even called the customer service number and attempted to talk to someone else, only to be told the same thing all over again. I was told they didn't take out fees for stop payment, so the payment didn't get stopped. It's their policy!

Well, their policy robbed me of a whole month and more of wages. And the saddest part of all of this is that my brother was terminally ill, given only a few weeks to live. I had to borrow money to go to Georgia to visit him on his death bed.

Even after explaining my situation to my bank, who claims customer satisfaction is #1, they still let the payment go through and charged me an outrageous amount in overdraft fees, totaling $456.00.

They robbed me when I was at my lowest and all they could say is "I'm sorry, it's policy". This isn't the first time Fifth Third has done this to me, but it will be the last. After Fifth Third getting a bailout, they are still allowed to rob people.
