Suspending Customers' Card till They Pay Their Bill

I have been a loyal customer of American Express for many years. They are my primary personal and business card. Lately, I have been getting phone calls from them every month asking when I am going to pay my bill and letting me know that they are suspending my card until it is paid. This month, I got a call before I even received the bill! My credit rating is pretty good (719) and I have no history of late payments.
The suspending of my card is what I call "over the top" action. I have so many other transactions tied to this card that it creates a domino effect. I am in the process of finding another card to use. If American Express thinks it is protecting itself via these actions. I hope they understand that it going to cost them customers. This economy won't last forever, but my memory of how I've been treated will.
Arte they within their legal rights to harass me like this and suspend my card? I smell a class action lawsuit
