I had to laugh when a friend sent me a link he saw online to this site and the link about Fifth Third Bank. I joined the bank because my employer is an account holder there.
They charge $5 to cash a check unless you have an account. I got a checking account to avoid this fee. They call it free checking, but they run a very lucrative side scheme with the overdraft fees that occur as a result of their creative book juggling.
I had to go more than once in person to get various OD charges taken off my account. It was getting out of hand. Every post I have read here about their schemes hit very close to home. It's the same story as mine in a nutshell.
Bottom line... I closed the checking account, opened a savings account for $100 and took out $95 the next day. The $5 left over keeps the account active to still cash my employer's check for free.
I now have an account for checking/debit with xxxxxxxxx, and in over a year, have had no problems. Don't do business with Fifth Third if you don't have to.
