Double fees charged for a payment made a few days late

I had to pay my credit card on July 30th and I had a problem with my bank while my check was cash. This was a Thursday, anyway I paid on Saturday Second but Capital One only report the payment several days later.

My monthly payment was for 39 dollars approximately and now they are charging 39 dollars for late payment and my credit with them is for 500 dollars and as I was used all this credit and I did not have available credit in my card they extracharged me for another 39 dollars.

Is it possible this? I ask a question, what's the really size of the damage if I no pay 39 dollars? For this reason I need to pay another 78 dollars?

Oh my god we are in recession and the banks are helping?
