Overdraft fee on a $2 charge and so-called free checking

Initially I thought I might be alone in having issues with BB&T, but I see that I am not. I felt I needed to add to the already growing list of consumers fed up with this bank. BB&T's allegedly free checking is anything but free. I realize that if a customer is well off financially, a problem will seldom arise. However, my family is one among many these days that is living from paycheck to paycheck, and BB&T's policy of selective debits and credits, which always favor the bank, is slanted far away from the customer and aimed at being able to levy a fee at every given opportunity.

There is the BB&T website, which is structured in a way that the customer never really knows how debits and credits are being applied. At first, again, I thought it was just me and I didn't get it. However, I have learned that their online banking, aimed at confusing the customer and generating more fees, has been going on for years! The final straw for me was being charged an overdraft fee for a $2 charge for just speaking to a customer service rep more than twice that month! If that is not putting the customer last, I have no idea what is.

And I love the company shills that come behind these reports and try to put forward the bank's view. Clearly it is a PR move by a bank employee or persons with a vested interest in the bank. So transparent, give me a break! Perspective is reality, and the reality is that the customer should not have to hire an attorney to look at the terms and conditions to ferret out all of the bias and fees that result in BB&T being a horrible choice for banking.

Reality number 2: let's be clear that banks make money on fees. However, since dealing with BB&T I have learned that some banks rely on fees for more than 50% of their revenue. I do not know what BB&T's internal numbers are and how the revenue pie is divided, but I know that BB&T's free checking is bordering on false advertising. I am in the process of closing my account with them, and I will be very happy when my hard-earned money is no longer in their hands. Good riddance!
