Bought Certificates of Deposit - They won't honor them Ripped off 4000 plus interest

I bought 2 certificates of deposit in 1986; prior to computerized banking. I have the certificates in my posession that say right on them MUST SURRENDER TO REDEEM. PNC did one month of research and has nothing on file to show that I ever cashed these certificates; I still have them physically in my posession. They will not honor them. They said they are not liable to pay the CD. I put that money in there in good faith; just because it's been 22 years doesn't mean that they shouldn't / don't have to honor them.
