Business & Finance

I am very upset. Countrywide has charged us with bogus fees to increase the amount we owe them. We brought our house 4 years ago and was very happy at the time. A couple years later I lost my job and we got behingd on our payments. Countrywide worked out a repayment plan for us. The problem was that they our payments doubled. It took a few months but we did catch up or so we thought.

2 years later we had to sell our home because of a job relocation for my husband. Countrywide told us that our payoff was $140,729.30, but when the attorney received the payoff statement the payoff amount had increased tremendously. The payoff changed to $151,000.00. I immediately called Countrywide to ask about these fees because I felt that someone had made an error.

I was told by one of their representatives that Countrywide has the right to inspect the property periodically. She went on to tell me that from the time that we had gotten behind, well over a year ago that they had been doing a drive-by inspection of our home. They had been charging us $15 a month for a 1 1/2 years. I was livid.

The worst part was that there had been several title searches on our home without our consent. We never refinanced our home or tried to get second mortage. She stated that this information is public information and anyone can request a title search. For example, have you ever received fliers in the mail asking about refinancing your home? I did but like always I threw these out.

Well she said that these companies had contacted them and had requested a title search. Countrywide then charged my husband and I the fees for completing the title searches or gettuing their lawyer to complete the title searches. They had charged us $300 each time that this was done.in one month two companies had requested a title search and we were charged $600.00.in the meantime we had been making payments and Countrywide had been using this money to cover for the title searches causing our account to go delinquent w/late fees being added and our payments not getting posted in a timely fashion. I did not find this out until the Closing Lawyer contacted us about the payoff of the home. So instead of receiving money for the equity in our home, we had to come to the table w/$6500.00.

What could we do? We had to sell the house because we could not continue to pay for this home and pay for our current home. Countrywide told us that this was legal and they did not need our permission to grant title searches or inspections, even though they had been billing us the entire time. Someone has to help us no family should have to go through this. If there is a Class Action Lawsuit please respond. We will never use Countrywide again.

Signed,
