I even paid them off and they say i still owe them money

I called them and ask what my pay-off would be and they told me what to send and i did. I also told them i wanted to close my account when they recieved my last payment. About a month later i got an email saying i had a balance of 10.00, so i called & told them i had made my final payment but of course they said i had a charge of some kind they had not added in. I told them i wasn't paying and hung up. How can they get away with stuff like this, leagally?
