Abusive "wrong number" calls

This morning, I received a call asking for someone with a similar name to mine. I could see on the caller i.D. That this was some sort of collection agency (Midland Credit) and so I politely asked where they obtained my phone number from. The male voice responded: "If you speak English than you just say, 'that is not my name." and he hung up on me.

I called the number back and spoke with another male voice who told me that no one had been rude or abusive to me on the phone - that was just my perception. Wrong numbers happen and there's nothing I can do about it.

I don't owe any money, I have good credit and I get calls like this sometimes - where Midland or some such company asks for someone with a similar name to mine. I get concerned about identity theft and I take these matters seriously. I don't think I would have bothered reporting this call (which was quickly aborted when the caller realized they had the wrong number) except for the totally rude and disrespectful way in which I was spoken to by someone representing a 'big company' (the second man explained to me that Midland is a very important, million dollar company) that mistakenly calls me, in my home, and starts giving me nasty advice on how to use the English language.

I just wanted to know how this big important company mistakenly came across my telephone number. Does this company to have the right to ring me in my home and disturb me with their mean employees just because my name sounds like someone who owes them money?
