False credit reporting for 6 years, ripoff

In 1999 I had a bank of america credit card. We were having some financial trouble and the account went into collections. I tried to work out some payment plan with them but the sold my account to an attorney" Eskanos & Adler 2325 Clayton Rd Concord, CA 94520 1-800-364-9919. I paid my account off to this attorney. They sent me a letter in 1999 that the account had been settled.

Every time I went and applied for credit My bank of america account showed up as past due for like $2200.00 on my report. I had the letter from the attorney that said it was settled and that was usually enough to get by on.

Well after tons of calls and transfers and hangups I finally got it removed off my credit in Sept. 2006. The letter from bank of america reads: We have reviewed your request to update the status of your account and will report the above listed account as being settled in a full charge off. I guess that means I never should have paid that attorney. Well at least now after 6 years of ruining my already bad credit bank of america has decided I don't owe them $2200... Any Idea's???
