Military Banking Ripoff false credit reporting non existant accountrt

My husband and I WERE going through the process of refinancing our home. We were told by our loan officer that we had something on our credit report that was negative. We were like... What? Bank of America Military Banking had reported a $60,000 debt that was written off. Okay... We have NEVER taken out a loan for that kind of money. We called BofA and they told us they had no record of it. The only thing they had under his SSN was an old checking account we closed about 2 years ago. This is showing up we opened this account March. And on the credit report it is showing up as BofA Military Banking and it is delinquent/write off. How can I get this taken care of? This is really hurting our credit score and this doesn't seem fair. How can companies report nonsense? Can we sue them... Can someone help and give me some advice about how to approach this... I am really super pissed. Please give me some feedback. Thanks
