Dairyland Insurance
Ripoff bait and switch billing

Business & Finance

I am an avid motorcyclist and have insured various bikes with Dairyland for several years.in December '05 I added a new R1 to my collection, and needed to add it to my policy.

It was renewal time anyway, so my agent contacted Dairyland for a quote, and added the new bike (for a total of three insured cycles). I carry several other policies through the same agent and have always purchased all policies up front. As usual, I paid for the full year on the spot for a total of five policies.

In January I began receiving "supplemental" billing statements from Dairyland. I hoped it was a mistake, and (foolishly) hoped they would catch and correct it in short order.

Forward to the end of February, I have received the third and final bill from Dairyland, it advises me that I will be canceled if I fail to pay by March 6. Dairyland is demanding additional premium that ammounts to fifty percent of the original quote, which was paid in full in December! Even if I refuse to pay, they still owe me about four more months of coverage.

At this point I head over to my agents office with my 'paid in full' receipt, and the latest 'supplemental bill'. My agent is puzzled as well.

After contacting Dairyland, my agent advises me that Dairyland misquoted the policy to him. When they decided to charge me half again the quoted price, they bumped me into an installment program and began billing me. Ironically, this also caused them to remove a discount for purchasing a full year up front. And they added late charges on the unpaid bills, along with a seven dollar installment fee for each of three billed installments.

After a heated exchange between my agent and someone at Dairyland, they were kind enough to waive the late charges and installment fees, but refuse to honor the original price. My agent was not satisfied with their handling of the matter and is contacting someone else at Dairyland and will follow up with me tomorrow.

In my opinion, a price was offered and accepted, payment was tendered and the transaction was closed.intangible nature of the product should not entitle Dairyland to arbitrarily alter the original contractual obligation. It is certainly no way to treat a customer...

As an ongoing matter, I remain optimistic about the outcome... And hope to avoid any unfortunate (and costly) mishaps.
