Bank Of America
Open account on-line gave incorrect ATM access Ripoff Nationwide

Business & Finance

I have multiple accounts with Bank of America, including a custodial savings account with my son, a minor. I wanted to open a money market account for a better interest rate. I decided to do so online.

Through an online chat with a service rep, I learned that I must have the funds in my checking account for transfer to the new account. No problem. Opened the account.

The following day I transferred more funds into the new account.

One night I logged in to the web site to find that my money market account was missing $500. The transactions showed two ATM withdrawals, one for $400, and one for $100. I immediately called customer service, who said this was definitely a problem because it wasn't my card (no kidding).

It was then that I discovered that when I checked the box for opening the account requesting ATM access (as I often deposit checks), they gave ATM access to only my son's ATM card and not mine! I had my son's ATM card canceled. The rep conceded this was a problem and said a report would be filed, and I should receive a notice in the mail that I would sign and return. None showed up.

I called customer service again about a week later and told them this was a problem. This time they did send the paperwork which I signed and returned. My account was credited the $500.

Then I get a letter about a month later stating that their investigation shows that the withdrawals were authorized (by whom I wonder because I didn't authorize them) and that the credit would be reversed. The letter stated that I could call and request the documents used in the investigation. I did, and nothing has shown up yet.

I've done a lot of business online and I've never experienced a problem like this. Their stance when I talked to the rep to request the paperwork was that I should take my son to court. This is what the rep read to me that was noted on the investigation. I maintain that there would not have been any withdrawals had they not given access to the wrong ATM card.

Don't open accounts online, go do it live and in-person!
