Merchants' Credit Guide
Deceptive collection practices, ripoff Happauge

My husband received a collection letter from Merchants Credit Guide Co.in May. They indicated that their client is NCO Portfolio Management, Inc. With the original creditor as Signet Bank in the amount of 4000.00 plus dollars.

This company has called us every day, except Sunday, and sometimes more than once since June. Caller ID can never identify them and at least twice they left a message asking for a call back.in each case they informed us that they were not a sales call, but wouldn't leave a message as to the nature of the call.

I do not take calls from unidentified sources and companies I have no business with. I know the calls are coming from Merchants Credit Guide CO because early on only their phone numbers appeared. I "googled" their phone number and found this site.

My husband and I have been married for twenty years and lived together for 1 and 1/2 prior to marriage. I have handled the finances since day one and I can assure you I know nothing about Signet Bank.

My husband doesn't have any clear memory of Signet Bank as being a company he ever dealt with. He does admit that after graduating college he had a lot of financial difficulty which resulted in some unpaid debt. (That was over 23 years ago)

Our credit reports are checked yearly and this debt is not listed on the report.in fact, my husband has excellent credit.

The advice we received from an Attorney was to either wait and see what MCGC does next or send a letter requesting proof. I have since read about such requests for proof being met with an affadavit of debt instead of a signed contract.

This debt is either not my husband's, or it is over 23 years old.in any case, I have heard the horror stories about re-aging old debt and illegally putting it on credit reports.

We plan to take any and all legal avenues available to us.
