Collection Notices Over a $16 BP Charge Ruined Credit

Business & Finance

I have been an Amoco credit card owner since 1990, with a perfect credit rating with them as well as with all my creditors.

I received a new BP (British Petroleum) card about when Amoco was bought by them. It stated that I should now use the BP card. I promptly cut the Amoco card into little pieces and trashed it.

I used the BP card about once or twice a year, just to keep it open, and paid off each statement.

In mid-September, I received a notice from a collection agency saying I owed $16.00 to BP/Amoco. I promptly called the police and filed a report. I sent registered letters to BP and the collection agency stating that it was not my charge and that I had not received any bills for this charge either.

In mid-October, I received a notice from a second, different collection agency. I repeated the mailing steps above.

In late October, I received a notice from Citi about my letters, with copies of the "supposed" statements that were sent to me in February 2003, March 2003, April 2003, May 2003, June 2003 and July 2003, and a form to fill out with what I was disputing, which needed a notary public stamp. I had not received any of those statements, which were mailed to the correct home address, the same address I have been at for 7 years and the same address the collection agency mailed me at. I filled out the form, had it notarized, and sent it registered.

In mid-November, I received a letter from a collection agency, this time representing Citi on this matter. I followed the same mailing practices again.

Yes, I have many, many little green cards from this, but nary a proper response from any of the companies listed above. No phone calls, no letters, nothing but little green cards from the post office saying all my registered letters were received.

Needless to say, they had reported this to the credit agencies months ago. My perfect credit record is ruined. I just thank God that I had none of those 0% credit cards open at the time. As you all well know, those cards could have jacked up the interest rate because I "defaulted" on this card.

Sitting and waiting in TX for the next letter...
