DVR - Direct TV HD DVR package

We have had Direct Tv for a very long time. 10 years. We recently moved and was mislead that we were getting the DVR that records up to 5 shows at a time. Negative. We got a newer system but the same services. Now when there are 2 shows recording, I have noticed that atleast 1 records over by 1 min. Exp. 10-11:01 and this prevents the next show from recording. Is there a way to keep this from happening? Why do they do that. Seriously!!!
