Bait and Switch Tactics

Traveling & Tourism

We have come to expect companies to tack on hidden fees in order to artificially deflate their prices. No one, however, expects the hidden fees to exceed the advertised cost of the product.

After several weeks monitoring prices on international flights on ultimatefares.com, I was ready to make my purchase and was stunned when I clicked on "book now" that the "taxes and fees" on a $479 ticket came to $527— more than the price of the "ticket" itself.

Any product that is advertised as costing $479, but that actually costs $1,006, is clearly the product of an intentionally deceptive advertising tactic. Buyers should beware, and we should all sound a trumpet of outrage and ask our legislators to crack down on this kind of deceptive practice.
