Smurfit Stone hired me as a supervisor with an additional duty of being the Operational Excellence Plant Champion. When hired they told me that I would be on the road working in different locations for a yr or more. During this time I would be staying in motels but would be allowed to come on home the weekends. I told them that if I could not be home on the weekends that I was turning the job down. They assured me that I would be home on the weekends. They also told me that I could leave my home at the time I would normally leave home for my job in Knoxville. That would me that on my first assignment I would be arriving at my first job sight about 10 am each Monday. They also told me I could come home around noon on Fridays so that I could have Friday evenings at home and all day on Sat and Sun. The first weeking I was on the road they made me work through the weekend. Then then told me I had to be at work no later than 9 am on Mondays and could not leave until 3 pm. The work that I had to perform on the weekends was very physical requiring me to be under and on the machines for hours at a time. Remember I was hired as a supervisor and never even ask if I could perform such physical task. If I had known that this was involved I would have turned the job down. I am over 50 yrs old and have not done physical work for over 17 yrs. I didn't get to adjust to it I was just thrown into it and expected to do it. It was stated that if I or anyone else didn't want to do this then they could face termination. I toughed this out for 8 months but when the time got closer for us to do more of this physical work I turned in a notice and told them that I could not handle any more of this physical work. They accepted my resignation and never offered to make an accomaditions for me. When I quit I filled for unemployment. The company fought that because they said that I quit without just cause. I was shocked that they fought it since they would have only had to pay a very small portion of it since the time period covered would have gone back to my former employer of 26 yrs. Then in the appeals hearing with the unemployment agency members of the company staff twisted the truth so badly that with the unemployment lady treating me like trash, I had no way to correct their half-truths. Their respons in summary was that I was salaried so I was expected to work whenever and however long I was needed. I have been salaried for many yrs and I know that you have to work until the job is done but Smurfit-Stone lied to me about the time and hours I would have to work while on the Operational Excellence assignment.
