Why not to book with orbitz - airline tickets

I originally booked a flight through orbitz for my son to fly from Houston to Fairbanks with connecting flights in Dallas and Seattle. When I called to cancel the first leg of the trip they informed me that I would have to cancel the entire ticket and start from scratch informing me that in order to board the flight in Dallas skipping Houston it would cost me over $700 on top of the $631 I had already paid. American Airlines was willing to change the flight for $325.in the end though I ended up buying a ticket for him fly to Houston from Dallas for $226 so he could catch the flight because Orbitz refused to put a note on the account stating that he would be boarding in Dallas and not to cancel his flight which a supervisor admitted he could do but refused to on the grounds that American Airlines would cancel the ticket anyway even though they are the ones that told me to call orbitz because they could not edit the reservation themselves.
