United airlines: very bad customer service

My friend recently found that over 16 thousand of his UA frequent flyer miles were expired on January 1. We called UA Customer Service and asked how my friend could get the expired miles back. We talked to three UA agents and they all told us that my fried could get his miles back if he paid $50.00. The agents also told us that we must go to www.ualmiles.com to reinstate the miles by paying a fee ($50.00). They made us believe that we could have the 16 thousand miles back to my friend's account as soon as he pays $50.00. Well, that's a lie. When we signed on www.ualmiles, com, we found the following payment schedule:

1-25,000: $5025,001-50,000: $10050,001-75,000: $15075,001-100,000: $200100,001-150,000: $300150,000: $400

The truth is: my friend has to pay $400 if he wants his miles (the miles he earned by flying UA and using United credit card to purchase) back to his account. I told the UA agents that it did not make any sense that my friend paid for the flights and purchases to earn those miles. Now he has to pay again to get those miles back to his account. Please think again: you flew UA and UA promised to give you miles. After certain time, UA tells you that your miles expired. If you want the miles back, you must pay. Where is the right of passengers in this contract? The three agents we talked to did not tell us that we had to pay $400 to reinstate over 16 thousand miles. They told us all we needed to do was to go online and pay $50 to get the miles reinstated. They lied. For those who are not UA frequent flyer members, please never, never fly UA and get their credit cards. For those who are already UA members, please stop flying UA and find other airlines.in other words, you do not lose anything if you stop flying UA and/or stop using UA credit cards. The UA agents told us that their Customer Care would take care of our complaint. Based on what has happened to us, do you think UA really cares about its customers?
