Watch Out For Contract Details Have it all in writing and know what you sign

With Gold's Gym you had better bring your lawyer with you when you sign up. The flurry of promises and features the sales person tells you all vanish the moment you sign the contract.

Quote from their contract:

Buyer/members acknowledge that no oral promises or statements are part of this contract

We bought a membership for a family member from out of the country and were told it would be easy to cancel when they leave. We didn't like signing a 2 year contract, but were told that was the only option. We were also told "you are lucky, usually its a $100 cancellation fee, but now it's only $50".

The relative moved away, several months went by before we got around to cancel, our fault. When it came time to cancel we were shocked to find that:

The contract states a $100 cancelation fee. Nowhere does it say $50 like we were told. "Who reads all that crap on the back?" We should have.

We have to "Prove" that the family member moved away in a manner "acceptable to Gold's Gym". Power bill, lease contract" That will be fun to gather. The family member is 8,000 miles away in a communist country. Even if we get these things, I'm sure they can' read them and they are probably in the name of the husband. We are scratching our heads to figure out how to prove this. It may take months to prove, meanwhile Gold's is getting paid for nothing.

Fortunately we have about 10 other family members with contacts all close to expiring. If we get screwed we can screw them back by not renewing and joining 24 Hour fitness.
