AdvertisingAge Deceptive, Unethical and Harrasing Renewal Tactics

After spending $99 for a 1 year subscription of Advertising Age magazine to test it out, I decided that I would pass on renewing my subscription as the content simply does not apply to my current business enough to justify it. I was shocked and offended by the 2 renewal offers that have come by mail since that time, if you can call it an offer at all.
In the first letter, it states that although I have not asked to renew, that I "have a debt of $99 that has become quite serious." and that I need to pay my bill "to avoid further collection action." How did a voluntary magazine subscription that I chose not to renew result in a debt and obligation to pay?
A second, more threatening letter came by mail approximately a month later stating that I have been contacted several times and that they "have been clear that (I) owe $99.00 by" a date they specified and that I need to pay in order to avoid "forcing them to take further actions to collect this debt", again using threatening and harassing language to coerce payment when there has been no services rendered or even a request for such.
