With Friends who shoplifted

Okay, so I recently went shopping in Wal-mart and my friends were caught shoplifting and being I was with them I got pulled into the loss prevention room with them. I, myself, did not take anything.

They did not take anything off of my cart, in my baby bag, in my jacket or anywhere else you can think of. While I was in this room they asked me for my information and because I have never been in this type of situation before.

I handed them anything they asked for, signed anything they wanted me to, just so I can get out of there with my 4 month old baby. They allowed us to leave without calling the police which I was very grateful for as I did not want to make a phone call from jail for someone to come and pick up my baby so he would not have to go to DYFS (?) I was also told I could not step foot in that wal-mart (or on the property) for a year or I would be prosecuted for trespassing.

Before we left they notified us we would receive an letter from a lawyer stating we would need to pay a fine up to $150.00 depending on the amount of the merchandise which was taken.

I asked them, being I did not take anything, how much would my fine be? The loss prevention guy stated, I would not need to pay a fine. So you could imagine my surprise when I received an letter from a lawyer stating I needed to pay an fine for my involvement in an incident which is considered shoplifting at a Wal-Mart.

When I call the lawyers office, they tell me their records indicate I was the one who stole the items and they got everything out of my bag. My "friends" have not received anything from any lawyer requiring them to pay a fine. When I ask them if there is someone from Wal-mart I can speak to so I can clear this up, they tell me I will only be referred back to them and they have to go by the report.

They also told me I was liable cause I was with them while they were stealing the merchandise, which is also not true, I did not see them put anything in their bags, open any items or take anything.

So how am I supposed to clear my name if I can't speak to the person who wrote the report on me in the first place.
