Emmy was the first client I worked for, on Elance.

The initial contract was for 2 hours of audio, to be transcribed. I did those and sent her the transcription. She then told me everything was OK with the file, and gave me more work. Over the course of the next 2 weeks I continued to do work for her, totaling 5.4 hours of audio. She has currently paid me for 0.7 hours.

Now here's the "fun" part. 17 (yes, seventeen) days after the project had already started, she writes that just now she has found out the actual requirements of how her transcriptions need to be made. She says I have to go back and change EVERYTHING I have done for her in the past 2 weeks, or she will not pay me.

I go to work, I do what I can. Of the 4.7 hours of work that had to be revised, I managed to send her 3 hours. I then contacted Elance support to ask her if her behavior was OK, and they confirm it was not. If she changes requirements in the middle of the project, she needs to budget for the extra work.

Anyway, she opens a dispute for the 1.7 hours that I was unable to revise, and Elance deletes them from my invoice. That's when I see what she was doing: In preparation to this, she had previously set the "Allowed Hours" for me, to 0 hours per week. So literally she was planning to not pay me, to be able to have my work cancelled by Elance.

Being new to the site, I did the work in good faith and delivered it, no problem. I didn't know she would revert to Nigerian scammer tactics down the road.

Finally, the 3 hours that I have done, and sent, and revised at no extra cost, she promised to pay those last week. Of course she did not. I opened a dispute for that invoice, and now I find out I run the risk of that being deleted as well, because Elance does not guarantee payment of invoices unless dispute is opened within 2 weeks of the invoice date.

All in all, STAY AWAY from ecdata, and Emmy Chelson. She has no problems with ripping people off, not paying contractors and breaking her own word. She gave me more work when other members of her team walked off on her, I did it, and this is how she acts in return.

The woman either does this on purpose, or out of massive, sheer incompetence. Outsourcing with money she doesn't have yet, not getting the full requirements of the project from the start, and basically being clueless about her own business.

In the meantime I have a transcriber team of my own, so I know what I am talking about. I have paid all contractors on time, have given clear instructions and have had no complaints from anyone I've ever worked with.
