Steriliser burnt - Closer to nature steam sterilise

I brought a tomme tippee electic steriliser and the plate at the bottom that heats the water looks like it is burnt or rusted, i have tried countless times to scrub it and its not doing anything! I'm really disappointed with the product and quite frankly more than a little bit worried about it affecting the bottles which then affects my daughter. I have stopped using the product and having to use a microwave steriliser which only does one bottle at a time which is a huge inconvienience.
