Golden Hand Moving and Storage
Had to pay more than 2X the quote, added weight to my items

Booked a move from Denver, CO to Montana, and 800 mile trip, for a 1 BR apartment, via World Wide Van Lines. Overestimated amount of stuff I had to be safe, and it came to 3108 lbs and that's what the quote was for. That price was to include everything, movers, including fuel. Paid a $444 deposit.

Moving day comes along, and its Golden Hand Moving that is there to move me out. They were aware that the items did not have to be moved right away as they were just going to storage. They were supposed to call with the weight of the truck, but never did (they claimed the number they had was wrong, a 7 instead of a 6 at the end, how that can be mistaken is beyond me). After 3 weeks of hearing nothing I called them and asked what the amount would be. THey claimed $1744 is what I owed (mind you, that on top of the $444 I paid). I happened to forget about that initial deposit and even though it was above what I was quoted for, I didn't want to hastle, so it was authorized on a credit card.

My stuff finally arrived and the next day Roni calls me up from Golden Hand Moving and claims that they made a mistake, the weigh of my stuff was really 4100 lbs and I owed them an additional $1000, which they charged to the credit card (which was never authorized). First off, there is no way in hell my stuff weighed 4100 lbs. I had 40 items, and that would mean I averaged 100 lbs per item. That is not even close, as most items were under 100 lbs, many very small items like area rug, snowboard, golf clubs, small bags, small boxes, etc that doesn't even approach 100 lbs.

So all in all, an initial $1400 quote (which is the only reason why I chose the movers route since it was only a little more than a UHAUL would of cost) turned into $3200. MOre than double. I'm unemployed at the moment and that is a dagger into my finances. Apparently this is not the first time this company has done this. Why isn't anything every done about these scams? Unfortunately I saw a news report about it after my stuff was already in their possession.
