Do we need a BBB for the BBB?

I am curious if anyone else questions the legitimacy of the ratings by the Better Business Bureau? If a company pays to be an "Accredited" member, is that company given extra leeway on complaints? Are the complaints about an "Accredited" company automatically shown as being resolved to the consumers satisfaction?
I complained about one of these companies, but it WAS NOT resolved to my satisfaction. I was never even contacted by the BBB.
If the companies are paying to be "Accredited", is a false impression given as far as the complaints are concerned?
