Unauthorized hold on bank funds

April 14 I purchased $30.00 of gas and $8.00 for a car wash at Arco on the corner of Southern and Ellsworth in Mesa Az. When I tried transaction at pump there was a problem. When I went inside transaction for $38.00 went through fine. Next day checking my bank account not only did they take out the $38.00 but they also put a $100.00 hold on funds out of my account. Contacting my bank they said there is nothing they can do and funds should be returned in 24 hours. How is it legal for them to do this? And why does the bank not have to return my funds immediately when I notified them that I had not authorized this? As far as I'm concerned they have taken $100.00 of my money without my consent. Do I have legal recourse in this?
